After two and a half years, we finally had the long-awaited Centennial Celebration on Saturday August 27, 2022. It had been postponed five times because of Covid. We were ready early Saturday morning with rain showers, but that was not going to stop us.

Seven food trucks and all our community partners set up in the lower parking area surrounded by the Quincy Jones Performance Center and the Teen Life Center and the entrance to the stairs to the gym. Two hundred volunteers were set to go, and they all came. The athletic field, the gym, the performing arts center, the commons and the library were used. More than 3500 people attended throughout the whole day, and the sun came out to make it perfect.

There were mini-reunions and music in different venues through the day. Our formal program was in the gym with Mayor Bruce Harrell ’76 as our MC, and he was so very good. Ted Howard ’85, former Principal, Dr. Hart present Principal, Toshiko Hasegawa ’06 Port Commissioner, and many more outstanding Garfield alums spoke.

We did it—we pulled off a fantastic event! Special thanks to Dick Lee ’61 Ballard Beaver and our Centennial Event Producer. Thank you, Dick! We could not have done it without you.

The whole day was filled with smiling faces and lots of hugs. The word of the day was HAPPY.
